We always advise the new owner to take their time and to gradually familiarise themselves with the operation of the 790. When I started work for my father back in the 1970’s, the first thing he taught me was how to repair the old Sew-Tric foot controls and motors. My training gradually increased and progressed until I had my own bench, which I had to polish and clean every night, and my very own set of tools – of which I was very proud. These tools also had to be regularly cleaned and maintained, and inspected!
I was then sent out to the local schools with our team of mechanics to service the many sewing machine models found in the needlework rooms of almost every school in Greater Manchester back then. Each of us serviced hundreds of sewing machines every year.
Dad always told me, if you can repair a sewing machine lad, you will never go hungry.
My brother Steve went through the same training some years later. Today, Steve and I still continue to treat our workshop as the backbone of our small family business. Between us both, along with Shahid and Luke, we have many years of accumulated training, expertise and experience. Each year we still service and repair many hundreds of sewing machines in our workshop.
Time and technology has certainly moved on and the modern sewing machine has come a very long way since the old ‘Sew-Tric Days’ of my youth. However, we still remain at heart an old fashioned family business, dedicated to the service and satisfaction of our many customers.
