The choice of a Bernina for dressmaking is wide. Although having said that, you don’t necessarily need to buy the top model. The Bernina 325 and the 335 are the two basic models in the line-up. Small and compact, compared to the Bernina five or seven series, they sew extremely well. Cottons, denims and ‘awkward’ fabrics should present no problems for either machine. Basically it comes down to the way Bernina sewing machines are made.
Requirements for a Dressmaking Sewing Machine
You can of course produce good work on an old Singer. But if we’re looking specifically at Berninas, let’s look at a few requirements. All these features are included with the Berninas 325 & 335.

- Needle Threader – a Needle Threader is always useful. Master its use.
- Adjustable Speed Control – a boon when it comes to tricky seams and the like.
- Feed Dogs – a good feed system makes all the difference.

- Free-arm – a free-arm is essential for sleeves, cuffs and trouser legs etc.
- Extension Table – the extension table will support larger projects.
