The inspection and lubrication of the Brother VR idle pulley gear is a crucial process that should occur at every regular service interval.

However, access to this component is limited due to its location, as the machine’s casing surrounds it. Consequently, it is often the case that many of the Brother VRs we encounter in our workshop have never had their idle pulley gear (IPG) lubricated.
Eventually, this can lead to the gear seizing and the teeth becoming worn and damaged.
Brother VR Error Messages
Any Brother VR suffering from this problem will begin to display error messages on the control screen.
At Bambers, inspecting and lubricating the IPG is a standard check on our service list. You can therefore be assured that every Brother VR in our workshop receives expert attention.
Industrial Endoscope
To help with our inspection of the idle pulley gear, we use an industrial endoscope. This tool allows us to conduct a close and detailed examination of this hard-to-reach component. By using this device, we can swiftly assess the condition of the teeth and identify any signs of wear or damage to the IPG.

It is also vital to lubricate the IPG with two specific lubricants recommended by Brother HQ. Once again, at Bambers, we maintain a range of all the required lubricants in our workshop.
Brother VR Service & Repair at Bambers
In a recent example, we collected a Brother VR for a general service from a lady in the North East. She hadn’t used Bambers before, but she found us on the internet and gave us a phone call.
We booked a date to collect, service and return her VR.
The lady reported that her machine had begun to make screeching sounds, and it had grown stiffer to turn. In addition, she noted that various error messages had appeared on her screen.
Once the Idle Pully Gear begins to ‘dry out’ it no longer turns as smoothly as it should. The Brother VR will then detect an issue and display these various error messages.
The teeth of the Idle Pulley Gear were intact
Once we had the lady’s Brother VR stripped down in our workshop, we went to work with the endoscope. Luckily, this revealed that all the teeth of the Idle Pulley Gear were intact. Although the gear shaft and collar were rather dry, it hadn’t caused irreparable damage. So, an application of the two lubricants solved the problem.
After our service was complete, and the lady’s VR had been thoroughly cleaned, lubricated and tested, the machine ran smoothly as it should. We phoned the lady, advised her of the charge and arranged the return of her machine. All good.
