What to Look For in a Sewing Machine

Choosing a sewing machine can feel like a maze — stitches, speed, computerised or not, features you’ve never heard of. So let’s keep things simple.

At Bamber Sewing Machines, we’ve been advising customers since 1946. Here’s what we believe matters most.

1. Know Your Purpose

Before anything else, ask: What will I be sewing?

  • Light repairs or occasional use? You need a basic, reliable machine.
  • Dressmaking or crafting? Look for more stitches, better fabric handling.
  • Heavy materials, quilting, or business use? You’ll want industrial features.

2. Mechanical or Computerised?

  • Mechanical machines are simple, sturdy, and often ideal for beginners.
  • Computerised machines offer auto-threading, speed control, programmable stitches, and LCD screens.

Our advice: start mechanical unless you’re already confident, or want digital convenience.

3. Essential Features to Look For

Here’s what we’d check on any machine:

  • Stitch Selection: Straight, zigzag, stretch, buttonhole — the basics.
  • Speed Control: Especially useful for beginners or delicate fabrics.
  • Needle Up/Down: Great for turning corners or detailed work.
  • Free Arm: Makes sleeves and trouser legs easier.
  • Drop Feed: Needed for free-motion embroidery or quilting.
  • Built-in Light: You’ll appreciate it more than you think!

4. Build Quality & Brand Reputation

You don’t need to buy the most expensive machine — but you do need to avoid the cheapest plastic boxes.

Look for:

  • A metal internal frame (adds weight, strength, and stability)
  • Solid-feeling dials and buttons
  • A brand with real support and spare parts (Brother, Janome, Bernina, Juki)

5. Ask These 3 Questions Before You Buy

  1. Does it do what I need — today and tomorrow?
  2. Can I get help or tuition if I’m stuck?
  3. Can it be serviced or repaired locally?

If you’re unsure — that’s where we come in.
